I am a teacher, pastor, scientist, writer, and speaker. I teach physics and astronomy at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and serve as Pastor for Adult Education at First Baptist Church of Decatur.
I write and speak at the intersection of religion and science (or faith and science, or spirituality and science; pick your favorite term). This topic often gets bogged down in conflict, jargon, and pointy-headedness, and I love humanizing it and taking it to non-specialists.
Religion-and-science is the topic of my life. In fact, it’s the story of my life. A science nerd since childhood, I hold a PhD in physics from Duke University and an MDiv from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. But my message is more than academic; as a human being who has struggled like everyone else and who identifies with fear and uncertainty, l bring a message not only of religion and science, but of faith, hope, and even love.
In addition to Agnes Scott, I’ve taught at Hampden-Sydney College, Berry College, Candler, and Columbia Theological Seminary. For three years I was a NASA Faculty Fellow at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and have twice served on the faculty of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative in Dharamsala, India.
My books and articles range from the scientific to the popular. Look here to learn more about them.
